When Mary Elizabeth was still young, the family moved to Portland where she attended school. Following her graduation from Pacific College, Mary taught for one year at Colton High School in Portland.

During the early years of raising their four children, Mary worked in an insurance office in Portland and, in 1952, the family moved to Newberg, Yamhill County, Oregon.

Mary spent the early 1950's teaching Release Time Christian Education in the Newberg Public Schools and, in 1958, she went to work for George Fox College (now University) in the Public Relations and Alumni Offices.  She returned to the public schools in 1970 as an Assistant Librarian at Newberg High School, retiring in 1980.
