bullet  General Notes

When Louis was two years old, his family moved from Hay Springs, Nebraska to Scio, Oregon and, in 1921, to the Newberg area.  The Sandoz family owned farms in Fernwood, then in Springbrook and finally in the northwest area of Newberg.  Louis went to school in Newberg, graduating first from Newberg High School, then from Pacific College (now George Fox University).

Soon after Louis and Mary married, the United States became involved in World War II and Louis went to work as a Marine Electrician in the shipyards in Portland, where they were living at the time.  After the war Louis held various factory jobs until 1952, when he moved the family back to Newberg where he joined his older brother in general farming and raising mink.  This was his major occupation until retirement.

Louis always had an interest in raising apples and before he had property, grafted new apple varieties from one tree to another.  In retirement he developed a miniature apple orchard, planting more than three acres of dwarf apple trees.  As he discovered new varieties that he liked, he would graft them onto his existing trees and eventually had over 120 varieties growing in his small plot.

Louis and Mary were members of the Newberg Friends Church and were quite active in the Home Orchard Society.  Mary was also active in the local Christian Women's Club.
