bullet  General Notes

Thomas Morris Center was born about 1813 in Ohio. He moved, with his parents, Ebenezer Center and Mary (Fetter) Center, to Illinois when he was still a child. Most of his records are under his middle name, Morris. He is referred to as "Thomas Morris" only in his Mother's estate packet. In September 1838 Morris Center purchased land in Edgar County, Illinois. On September 18, 1839, Thomas Morris Center married Mary Mapes in Edgar County, Illinois. They were still in Edgar County, Illinois during the 1840 Census and were farming. In May 1841, He purchased another 40 acres of land in Edgar County.

By 1850, Morris and Mary were in Missouri and their first child, Sarah, was born there about 1843. Their first son, Henry, was born there about 1850. Mary Ann followed in 1853 and Elmira was born about 1855, both in Missouri. In the 1857 & 1859 Kansas state census, they were living in Linn County, Kansas. More children followed: William J was born about 1860, Joseph W entered the world in December 1861. Friestone [sic] was born in 1865, and, finally, James W arrived about 1871.

In May 1865 they were in Marion, Douglas County, Kansas, moving on to Centropolis, Franklin County, Kansas sometime before 1870. On the March 1, 1875 Kansas census, his cousin, John Wesley Powell, son of Theophilus Powell and Rachael (Center) Powell is living with them. John started his practice as a physician there in Kansas. Morris died September 19, 1891 in Franklin County, Kansas.
