bullet  General Notes

BESSIE EVELYN CAIRNCROSS was born 22 July 1900 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Edmund William Cairncross and his wife, Eva Maude Morrow. The family emigrated to the United States. They first lived in Idaho (Buhl and Twin Falls) before eventually settling in Glendale, California.

On 4 June 1924, in Eagle Rock, California, Bessie married auto mechanic Jess Marvin Harper. Jess was born 29 January 1892 in Buffalo, New York, the son of James M. Harper and Ellen Callahan. Together they had two sons, Marvin Joseph Harper (1928 –1946) and Stanley Edwin Harper (1933 – 2008).

Jess and Bessie had been married for not quite 10 years when Jess was involved in an auto accident and died of his injuries on 24 April 1934 at the age of 42. Bessie remained a widow for the next 46 years until she died of a heart attack in the Glendale offices of Dr. David Bee. It was a week short of her 80th birthday. Bessie, like her husband before her, was buried in Valhalla Memorial Park.
