bullet  General Notes

Obituary — Friday, 27 Aug 2004 — South Whidbey Record — South Whidbey, WA

Eva Faye Fluharty, 94, died Aug. 27, 2004, at Careage in Coupeville. She was born Dec. 27, 1909.

She was born in Lake Andes, S.D., the youngest of five children. At age 3, her mother died and she was placed in an orphanage in Sioux City, Iowa. At age 4 she became the third adopted daughter of Mary and Nelson Hyde of Manson, Iowa. Following high school graduation she married Dale Fluharty. Four years later with their son, Bobby, they left Iowa for Kooskia, Idaho, having purchased unseen, an abandoned 160-acre log cabin homestead in the hills 14 miles from town. They lived and farmed there for 10 years. A daughter, Jean, was born during this time. They moved to Kirkland, Wash., in 1941. Many years later, they lived in Granite Falls and Everett. They built a house on Sunlight Beach and moved to Whidbey Island in 1983. Dale and Eva were married 60 years.

She lived off the island for three years, returning in 2003. An active, staunch Republican, her interest in politics never faded. Her one great regret was her inability to participate in this current election.

Her husband, Dale preceded her in death in 1989.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. at the Christian Life Center, 1832 Scott Road, B3, Freeland. Pastor Dick Jeffers will officiate. Remembrances may be made to the Christian Life Center.
