Don's parents were John and Rosina McLean. 

Don McLean had three uncles who died in World War II:  one was on a ship sailing to Russia which was attacked off the Norwegian coast, and he was killed when his gun exploded; another was on a submarine which hit a mine as they were entering a Maltese harbor; and another was on HMS Hood as it attacked the German pocket battleship Bismarck---the Hood exploded and this uncle was not one of the three survivors.
