Confusion regarding Pink and Pearl Arterburn:

Family tree information posted on FamilySearch.org regarding the family of John F. Arterburn and Mary Elizabeth Center cite two children, both born and died in the mid-1880s in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois, USA. In the family tree, they are listed as two daughters, Pink Arterburn and Pearl Arterburn. Both are given the same birthdate — 12 Nov 1886 in Mattoon, and both died in 1888 in Mattoon. Pink died 27 Feb 1888 per family tree information, and Pearl died 12 Aug 1888 per this same source.  This information appears in other family trees as well.

However, according to burial records in Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon (as input from cemetery and/or funeral home records and as listed on FindAGrave), there is an unnamed Arterburn infant born 1886 and died 12 Aug 1888 (Age 2; Lot Owner: Arterburn; Funeral Home:Peers) and an infant son Arterburn born 1888 and died 27 Feb 1888 (Son of John; Age not listed; Lot Owner: Arterburn, Robert; Funeral Home:Schilling).  It seems to me that these two records must refer to Pink (unnamed Arterburn infant) and Pearl (infant son Arterburn), and the original family tree information got the deaths of the two twins reversed.  Perhaps the genealogist who submitted the tree to FamilySearch.org also did not know that "Pearl" was a common name for men in the late 1800s (it did not become primarily a female given name until later in the 1900s) and that is why Pearl Arterburn was given female gender.

My best interpretation of the data from family tree sources and burial records is that John and Mary Arterburn had twin children born 12 Nov 1886 in Mattoon. The son was named Pearl, and he died 27 Feb 1888 (at the age of 1 year 3 months) and he was buried in Dodge Grove Cemetery. Pearl's twin sister was Pink Arterburn, who lived a few months longer, but she died on 12 Aug 1888 at nearly the age of 2 and she also was buried in Dodge Grove Cemetery.
