bullet  General Notes

JACOB ROOP was born 09 March 1817 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, the son of Christian Roop and Ann Brubaker.

On 27 Dec 1843 in La Grange County, Indiana, Jacob married his first wife, Sevilla Groves.  She was born 10 Aug 1821, but she died 03 April 1848 — only a few years after they were wed.  Sevilla left Jacob with a several young children, a daughter, Frances, and sons John and Lonson.

Four and a half months later, on 24 Aug 1848, still in La Grange County, Indiana, Jacob wed again, this time to Jane Young.  Jane was born 16 Dec 1825 in Adams County, Ohio, but she also died within a couple of years after their marriage, leaving Jacob with another young son, Christian.  (Jacob's second wife Jane died 13 Oct 1851 in La Grange County, Indiana.)

After Jane's death, Jacob travelled to Oregon with his young children, arriving on 26 Aug 1852.  He settled a claim in Clackamas County, Oregon on 24 Feb 1853.  Nine years later, Jacob married the twice-widowed Rachael Ruth (Center) Tull Powell.

Jacob's third wife, Rachael Ruth Center, was born 14 Apr 1819 in Ohio, the daughter of Ebenezer Center and Mary Fetter.  She married her first husband, Aaron Tull in Edgar County, Illinois on 04 Nov 1835.  Aaron died of tuberculosis, leaving Rachael with a young son, William Tull, born in 1838.  Rachael next married Theophilus Powell, a circuit preacher more than 26 years older than herself.  They married on 01 Nov 1841 in Van Buren County, Missouri, but came west to Oregon in the great wagon train of 1845.  Rachael had another 5 children with Theophilus, but then he died 20 Jan 1861 in Waldo Hills, Oregon.  A year and a half later, on 13 July 1862, Rachael married Jacob Roop.

She evidently made the home a happy one, as years later William Tull, Rachael's first son, married Frances Roop, one of Jacob's daughters.  Rachael died on 24 Dec 1890 in Clackamas County, Oregon at the age of 71 years.  Jacob passed on a few years after her, on 27 Aug 1894 at the age of 77.  They are both buried in the Rock Creek cemetery, which is about only a mile away from the Roop farm.
