bullet  General Notes

JOHN ALLAN was born 13 October 1866 in Eglinton, Londonderry, Ireland, the eldest son of John Allan and his wife Margaret Wight. Although he was born in Ireland, John grew up in Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland, which is the town his father was born in as well as all his younger siblings. His mother and older sister were also born in Ayrshire, Scotland (although not in the town of Tarbolton). In the 1871 census, when his parents were giving the details of his birth, John was listed as being born in Ireland. (The 1881 census record cannot be found.) However, in all subsequent census enumerations and official records and documents, John lists his birthplace as Scotland.  It's possible he never even realized that he was actually born in Northern Ireland.

John emigrated to the United States in about 1888, first settling in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. He married Helen "Nellie" Landsborough about 1890 (probably in New York). She was born 27 August 1868 in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, the daughter of David Landsborough and Eliza McGeorge. Together the couple had six children: Bessie, Nora, John, William ("Andrew"), Helen (sometimes known by her middle name "Grace"), and Robert.

Sometime after the 1900 census in Buffalo (where John worked as a car finisher), the family moved to Cecil, Washington County, Pennsylvania. In the 1910 census, John's occupation was listed as a carpenter for the mines. Only four years later, on 04 May 1914, John died of "Aortic Stenosis and Regurgitation" with "Oedema & Heart Failure." He was still working as a carpenter, and his age at death was 47 years, 6 months, and 22 days. John was buried in Venice Cemetery two days after his death, on 06 May 1914.  His wife Nellie lived as a widow for another 17 years, but when she died on 17 February 1932, she also was buried in Venice Cemetery.
