ELIZABETH GOWANS was born 15 June 1885 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the daughter of coal miner Walter Gowans and his wife Mary Hendrie.  She worked as a dressmaker.  On 15 June 1910, at Astarta Cottage in Hamilton, Elizabeth married her husband, Robert Boyd Haining. He worked as a grocer.  They soon emigrated to West Victoria, Australia, where Robert worked as a grocer in Dean's Marsh.  Later he worked as a clerk for the State Coal Mine which was owned by the Victorian Railways.

Elizabeth had three still-born children in addition to her two surviving daughters.  Her husband Robert died in 1948 at the age of 61 years old.  Then, just a few months later, her eldest daughter Mamie died.  Elizabeth lived with her one remaining daughter until her death of heart failure at the age of 87 years old.  She was buried in Wonthaggi Cemetery next to her husband and elder daughter.
