bullet  General Notes

HELEN LANDSBOROUGH —  or "Nellie" as she was known throughout most of her life —  was born 27 August 1868 in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, the daughter of shepherd David Landsborough and his wife Eliza McGeorge.  The spelling of Nellie's surname is a bit problematic as it was spelled multiple different ways in various official records. Some of the permutations include Landsbraw, Landsburgh, Landsbourg, Landsbourgh, Lansbaugh, Landsbaough, and of course, Landsborough. You would think the surname problems would stop once she got married, but Nellie's married surname was alternately spelled "Allan" or "Allen," depending on the record. ("Allan" is the typical Scottish spelling, whereas "Allen" is typically an English spelling of the surname.)

Nellie emigrated to the United States about 1890; this was also about the time that she married her husband, John Allan. They probably married in New York. The couple settled first in Buffalo, Erie County, New York; a number of their children were born there. Sometime after the 1900 census, the family moved to Cecil, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Together they raised 6 children —  Bessie, Nora, John, William ("Andrew"), Helen (sometimes known by her middle name "Grace"), and Robert.

John worked as car finisher in Buffalo, but as a carpenter in Cecil, Pennsylvania. He died at the age of 47 on 04 May 1914 and was buried in Venice Cemetery two days later. Nellie lived as a widow for another 17 years until she herself died on 17 February 1932 in Cecil Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA; she was buried in Venice Cemetery on the 20th. Her cause of death was listed as "Gastro-Intestinal Carcinoma" complicated by "Gangrene Left Leg."
