  • During World War I, Alfred served in the military in the New Zealand Army as an Honorary Captain in the Samoan Relief Wireless Unit in 1917-1918. 2

    New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, attested 27 Sept 1917. Samoan Relief Wireless Unit. Rank: Honorary Captain; Service No. 66230. Took over duties as Officer in Charge of the Wireless Station in Samoa. Served for nearly a year. Medically boarded and found unfit for service in Samoa (concussion and general debility). Discharged 13 Sept 1918. Received the British War Medal.
  • He resided at 45 Hawkes Street in Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand before 27 September 1917. 2
