Funeral Services for Aged Woman Held at Chapel

Funeral services were held at the Kenworthy chapel Monday for Mrs. Margaret Wilcox Blackerby, who died November 2 at the age of 89 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ada Bentley, in Portland.

Mrs. Blackerby was the last survivor of the Philip Mulkey wagon train which crossed the plains from Missouri in 1853. At the age of 7, [illegible] Mrs. Blackerby, born Margaret Adeline Wilcox, in Kentucky, was the eldest daughter of Thomas J. and Elizabeth Wilcox, and was one of several children in the party making the long and treacherous journey. Circumstances caused her to walk much of the way. Hannah Mulkey, one of the other children, became her lifelong friend.

The expedition arrived in the Willamette valley in August, 1853, following four months on the trail. By this time, Thomas Wilcox' oxen had died and he had been forced to abandon his wagon on the way. The family settled on a donation claim in Drift creek, near where [illegible] now stands.

At the age of 17, Margaret Wilcox was married in 1863 to Sidney Blackerby, who, with his parents, came to Oregon in 1847 or 1848 and occupied a nearby claim. Mr. & Mrs. Blackerby became the parents of nine children, four of whom survive. They are Mrs. Ada Bentley of Portland, Mrs. Jennie Cook of Albany, Howard M. Blackerby, Milwaukie and T. R. Blackerby of Oak Grove. There are ten grandchildren. Mrs. Blackerby is also survived by two brothers, J. D. Wilcox of Portland and A. R. Wilcox of Milwaukie.
