Bill Rhodes Sr.

William "Bill" Herbert Rhodes Sr., 86, of Lugoff, died Sunday, Aug. 21.

Born in Darlington, he was a son of the late Walton Anthony and Vermelle Blackmon Rhodes. He was married 59 years to the late Dorothy Downs Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes retired from DuPont and was a charter member of Lugoff Friendship Baptist Church, where he was an honorary deacon. He attended Clemson College for two years prior to World War II. He was authorized to wear 11 bronze battle stars on his Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for each of the following battle engagements: Landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi; Capture and Defense of Guadalcanal; Battle of Eastern Solomons; New Georgia group Operations; Gilbert Islands Operations; Bismark Archipelago Operations; Marshall Islands Operations; Task Force strikes on Turk, The Marianas, Palau, Yap, Ulithi, Wolesi, Satawan and Ponape; Western New Guinea Operations; Assault and Operation of Iwo Jima; and the Navy Occupation Medal (Asian Clasp) while on the USS North Carolina and USS Newberry.

Mr. Rhodes was a man of God; he was honest, fair and kind. He especially loved his wife, Dorothy, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed reading his Bible and going to church, where he was loved by everyone.

Mr. Rhodes was predeceased by four brothers and five sisters.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lugoff Friendship Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Matt Galloway and Bruce Watford, with in Lugoff First Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Kornegay Funeral Home, Lugoff-Elgin Chapel.
