Kenneth L. Franklin

Ken Franklin, 84, of Loveland, died June 18, 2007. Kenneth Linn Franklin, the only child of Myles and Ruth (Houston) Franklin, was born March 25, 1923 in Alameda, Calif.

Ken served in the South Pacific during World War II in the 4025th Signal Service Group of the United States Army. He attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received his Ph.D. in astronomy in 1953 and served as Science Assistant in the Department of Astronomy, 1953 –1954. Ken was a research fellow in Radio Astronomy at the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institute in Washington, D.C., 1954 –1956. While there, staff member Bernard F. Burke and Ken discovered the radio emissions from the planet Jupiter. In 1956, Ken became a staff member of the American Museum of Natural History-Hayden Planetarium in New York City where he served as Astronomer and Chief Scientist. Ken was also Assistant Chairman and Chairman for the Hayden Planetarium from 1972 to 1974. Ken was Astronomer Emeritus from 1985-2007. The asteroid #2845 was named Franklinken in his honor.

Ken taught at several universities including City University of New York, New York University, Cooper Union, and he was Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University. He was a consultant on astronomy and space science for aerospace firms, publications, and the news media. Ken participated in the National Security Seminar, Army War College in 1975, and he served as Chairman of the Museum Council of New York City, 1977 and 1978. Ken was the astronomy editor from 1970-1995 for the World Almanac and 1980-1992 for the Farmer's Almanac. He was a member of the editorial advice panel of Science Digest, 1970 –1985 and wrote the weekly Sky Watch feature for the New York Times, 1983 –1997.

Ken was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Explorers Club. As a member of the American Astronomical Society, Ken served in the Harlow Shapley Visiting Lecturer Program, visiting one or two colleges each year. He was also a member of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the New York Academy of Sciences, Sigma Xi, and the Trap-Door Spiders.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
