         PEORIA — Corinne Woodruff Michel, 77, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Peoria, the wife of Robert H. Michel, the former minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at INOVA Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Va.
         She died of complications from a stroke she suffered following surgery in January.
         Born April 30, 1926, in Onida, S.D., to Lewis McCabe and Constance Noste Woodruff, she married Robert H. Michel on Dec. 26, 1948, in Peoria. He survives.
         Also surviving are three sons, ----- of Chicago, ----- (and -----) of Vienna, Va., and ----- (and -----) of San Francisco; one daughter ----- (and -----) ----- of Alexandria, Va.; three grandsons; and one brother, Herbert "Jesse" Woodruff of Salem.
         She was preceded in death by two brothers.
         An accomplished musician, she received BA and BME degrees in piano from Bradley University and sang in Bradley's a cappella choir. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota musical fraternity and Pi Beta Phi sorority.
         She taught music at Roosevelt Junior High School in Peoria. She was a longtime community leader in music and the arts and a member of the original community group that brought opera and ballet to Peoria.
         She was active in the Central Illinois Youth Symphony, Peoria Players, the Amateur Music Club of Peoria and Cornstalk Theater and also performed in a chamber music group in Washington.
         Each year, Bradley awards the Corinne and Bob Michel Scholarships. The Everett McKinley Dirksen Center in Pekin oversees the Robert H. and Corinne Michel Congressional Education Fund, created with a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
         She was very active in the Congressional Club for members of Congress and their spouses and the Republican Congressional Spouses, serving as an officer of both.
         She was the recipient of a number of awards, including one from the Children's Inn at National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., which provides housing for parents of hospitalized children. She was a member of the Society of Sponsors of the U.S. Navy and in 1968 christened the USS Peoria in San Diego.
         She was a member of the International Neighbors Club; the Daughters of 1812; the Republican Women's Federal Forum of Washington, for which she served as chairwoman in 1989 and 1990; and the GS Chapter of the PEO.
         She was a member of the Methodist Medical Center Service League and was a longtime volunteer for the Central Illinois Mental Health Association.
         She also served as a member of the Capitol Hill Club board of directors and headed congressional relations efforts for the first Ronald Reagan inauguration.
         She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Peoria.
         Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dingledine Hall at Bradley University. The Revs. Randall Saxon and Pat Collins will officiate. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Wilton Mortuary. Burial will be private.
         Memorials may be made to the Corinne and Bob Michel Scholarship Fund at Bradley University.
