bullet  General Notes

JOHN BROWN ALLISON was born 19 September 1893 in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the son of David Watson Allison and his wife, Agnes Jeffrey. He was named after his grandfather John Brown Allison (1832 –1895).  Unfortunately, John's mother Agnes died when he was still an infant, in 1894. After her death, John was raised by his maternal grandmother and his aunts.  His grandmother died when he was only 10 years old, and his eldest aunt, Jane "Jeanie" Jeffrey, then became his foster mother. John became known as JOHN ALLISON JEFFREY.

Before the war, John worked as a joiner. Although Irvine was still his permanent address, he was living in Maxwelltown, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

On 11 Dec 1915, at Dumfries, John enlisted in the military. He was first with the 112, Highland Field Coy., R.E., but in early 1917 he transferred to the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Regiment, 17th Battalion, Regimental Number 76199. He was killed in action near Ypres on 20 September 1917 (according to his military records). This is the date on his marker at Tyne Cot Memorial; however, the cenotaph at Irvine Kirkyard puts his death date as the 19th of September 1917 — his 24th birthday.
