bullet  General Notes

NOBLE OMER GRANDON was born 28 February 1895 in Rinard, Wayne County, Illinois, USA.  He was the son of John Grandon and Lydia Frances Stonecipher; he got his middle name after his paternal grandfather.  Noble was the youngest of 6 children.  He first appeared on the 1900 census with his family in Bedford Township, Wayne County, Illinois, USA.  His father worked as a farmer, but later took up work for the rail road.  Perhaps that is why the family next appeared on the 1910 census in Flora, Clay County, Illinois, USA.

In 1916 in Clay County, Illinois, Noble got married for the first time.  His bride was Miss Goldie Mabel Rodgers, daughter of James Alexander Rodgers and Harriet Franklin.  Goldie was born in January of 1900 in Sailor Springs, Clay County, Illinois, USA.  Their first child was a daughter; unfortunately, she was stillborn — born, died, and buried on 14 June 1918 in Flora, Clay County, Illinois, USA.  No name was given on the death certificate.

The next child was a son, Noble Earl Grandon, born on 16 June 1919 in Flora, Clay County, Illinois, USA.  The young family showed up there on the 1920 census — husband Noble, wife Goldie, and 6-month-old Noble Earl Grandon.  By now Noble Omer Grandon also worked for the rail road, just like his own father.  He was a pipefitter in the 1920 census.  Perhaps it was his railroad job that caused them to move to Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois, USA (1923 city directory), and after that to Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky, USA (1930 census, railroad plumber).

About 1925 Noble married a second time, to Mary Alice.  Alice was born 11 August 1905 in Illinois, the daughter of German immigrants. Her surname might have been Yordy, but nothing is known for certain at this time.  (It is also not known what happened to Noble's first wife, Goldie Rodgers Grandon.)

The Grandon family stayed in McCracken County, Kentucky, and it was there that tragedy struck in 1940.  Noble's son Noble Earl Grandon was in an automobile accident and he died on 19 October 1940 at the age of 21.  The son was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, Clay County, Illinois (in the same cemetery where Noble's parents John and Lydia were buried).

The family continued to live in Kentucky.  Noble died on 08 May 1966, in West Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky, USA.  He too was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, Illinois.  22 years later on 28 September 1988, Alice also died in West Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky, USA.  She was laid to rest next to her husband in Elmwood Cemetery in Flora, Clay County, Illinois, USA.
