  • Parents: William Dawson and Elisabeth Govan. 4 Daniel's father William was a lock keeper at Kelvin dock, and he died in 1863 when Daniel was only 7 years old. Daniel was orphaned, then, as his mother Elizabeth had died two years earlier.  Fortunately, Daniel had many elder half-siblings from his father's earlier marriages to Jean Meiklejohn and Helen Paterson.
