BERTHA LOUSE ARTERBURN was born 26 June 1890 in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois, USA, the youngest daughter of John F. Arterburn and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Center. There is some disagreement on her exact year of birth, since different records give different years. The 1900 census lists Bertha as being born in 1889, but gives her age as if she were born in 1888. The year most commonly used in later records is 1890.
Bertha's father died when she was quite young — only 2 or 3 years old. The family stayed in Mattoon until Bertha was a young woman, but then came a number of moves. First to Indianapolis for a few years, then to Peoria. Eventually, a good bit of the family ended up in Dayton, Ohio.
On 31 October 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, Bertha married Albert Frank Maly of Cincinnati, Ohio. It was her second marriage, and his third. Their previous marriages had ended in divorce. (The name of Bertha's first husband is not known at this time.) Albert was born 26 January 1880 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Jacob Maly and his wife, Augustina "Augusta" Friend. Albert was a photographer. Neither he nor Bertha had any children, either together or from their previous marriages.
Albert died 28 January 1962 in Cincinnati, and was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery on the 31st of January 1962.
Some time after Albert's death, Bertha married her third husband, Joseph Fredrick Hardinghaus. Joseph was born 19 April 1893 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Fred Hardinghaus and Mary Miller. Joseph worked as an electrical apprentice, and later as a shipyard machinist. Although it's possible Joseph was previously married and divorced, there is no sign of any wife or children in any of his census enumerations or draft registrations. And by the time Bertha and Joseph married, Bertha was long past the age of childbearing. So there are no descendants for either Bertha or her husbands Albert or Joseph.
Joseph died on 05 Aug 1970 in Cincinnati, and he was buried on the 8th of August in the Johnson family plot at Spring Grove Cemetery (Joe's mother's first husband was a Johnson). When Bertha died on 27 January 1986, nearly 15½ years after her third husband Joseph, she was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery on the 30th of January 1986 in the space next to her second husband Albert.
