bullet  General Notes

MARY JEFFREY COCHRANE was born 27 October 1886 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, the daughter of stone mason Joseph Alexander Wright Cochrane and his wife, Ann Simpson. Second-born Mary was the eldest surviving child in a large family with more than 10 siblings. Most of her siblings survived to adulthood, although her elder brother had died in infancy only a few months before she was born.

A month before her 18th birthday, Mary married her husband, coal miner James Orr, on 30 September 1904 in Irvine.

After a couple of years in Irvine, the family settled in nearby Dreghorn parish, and it was there that most of their children were born. First-born daughter Ann Simpson Orr died in infancy in 1905, but 3 daughters and 3 sons survived to adulthood.

In 1927, her husband James and their eldest son, James, travelled to the United States to join James' brother, Robert. A year later Mary followed with several of the younger children. The family settled in Harvey, Illinois.

James worked as a gardener, and then as a laborer for the Whiting manufacturing company, and finally as an employee of the local newspaper. James died on 10 July 1952, and was buried in Cedar Park Cemetery.

Mary survived as a widow for an additional 6 and a half years, and then she also died on 9 January 1959 at the Hazel Crest General Hospital after a month-long illness. Services were held 12 January 1959 at the W. E. Kerr Chapel, with Rev. John Rossel officiating; burial was in Cedar Park Cemetery.

Surviving Mary are three daughters, Mrs. Robin Carlin, Mrs. Nida McCrindle and Mrs. Mary Ackerman of Harvey; three sons, James Jr. of Harvey, Joseph and Hugh of Milwaukee; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; six brothers, John, Andrew, Samuel, David, and Joseph Cochrane, all of Scotland, and Alexander Cochrane of Milwaukee; and two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Petty of Australia and Mrs. Ann Begley of Scotland.
