Mary married Sam MATTHEWS, son of Alfred Gatlin MATTHEWS and Mary Georgia Ann GATLIN, on 20 November 1910 in Bell County, Texas, USA. The marriage ended in divorce before 1928. (Sam MATTHEWS was born on 1 August 1887 in Texas, USA,3 died on 26 October 1965 in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, USA and was buried on 28 October 1965 in Copperas Cove, Coryell County, Texas, USA.)

bullet  Marriage Notes

This might be pure fabrication, but according to a story told by someone from Sam's second family (a known big story teller), the split between Sam and his first wife Lora happened when Sam awakened from a nap, and Lora was standing over him stropping a butcher knife like she was getting ready to cut his throat. Sam rolled off the bed, jumped out the window, and never went back. A creek he'd had to pass over coming back from his mail route was so swollen he couldn't get home, so he'd spent the previous night on the other side.

As another child from Sam's second family commented, "Might not be a bit of truth in it (or about the creek), but it's a pretty good story."
