bullet  General Notes

James had done something of which the rest of the family did not approve, so he disappeared and was never heard again from any of the family.  (Gertrude Brown believes it was running away with another man's wife.)

According to a reprint in the Oregonian, in 1931 (50 years later), he went over near Freeport, on Gray's Harbor, Washington and engaged in dairying for a few years, was well respected in that community, sold his farm in 1881, and returned to Portland with four thousand dollars in his pocket, and was murdered for the money, about Oct. 24, 1881.  His parents were no longer living by this date, and his brother and sisters did not hear of it until years later.
