bullet  General Notes

Ray Hayes was born on 29 November 1920 in Cloverdale, Tillamook County, Oregon, the son of Leslie Elbert Hayes (1889 –1957) and Maude Laura Stinnette (1893 –1982).
On 2 September 1939 in Coquille, Coos County, Oregon, Ray married his first wife, Leona May Cole (1923 –1997). Leona was the daughter of Harry Harvey Cole (1897 –1924) and Luellen Young (1904 – Abt 1932). Together, Ray and Leona had three children: Claud, Darrell (1941– 2010), and Carla. However, the marriage soon ended in divorce. Eventually, the children took on the surname of Myers (from Leona's third husband, Kenton Andrew Myers).
During World War II, Ray served in the U.S. Marine Corps, enlisting in April 1944.
On 2 August 1947 in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington, Ray married Mae Houser (1923 –1989), the daughter of Leroy Houser (1886 –1963) and Eunice Marie Rutledge (1897 –1971).
Prior to her marriage to Ray, Mae had been married to Willard Pershing Graber (1919 –1988), with whom she had a son, Roger Victor Graber (1942 –1997), in 1942. Ray adopted Roger soon after their marriage. Apart from Roger, Ray and Mae had another son together, Bruce Gerald "Jerry" Hayes, as well as a child that died in infancy.  Although Ray and Mae had no more biological children, they did adopt and foster a number of children. Ray's obituary mentions 4 additional daughters and another son.
Ray passed away at the age of seventy-five. His wife, Mae, passed away six years before him. They were both buried in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
