bullet  General Notes

In his late teens, Harry left home to find work. He moved to Alexander County, Illinois to work at a gun powder mill. Like the other workmen, he boarded at "Grandma Brown's house". There he met her daughter. He and Ethel were married in 1910. Most of their married life was spent in East St. Louis, Illinois, where they lived for over 35 years. However, in 1956, having their fill of cold weather and coal furnaces, they sold their home on 83rd Street and moved to Tampa, Florida, with their granddaughter Rita May Holdener. She was the oldest of the grandchildren and the first to call him Daddypop, a name that stuck and was used endearingly by all the other 23 grandchildren.

Harry worked for H.H.Hall and Moore Construction Company in E. St. Louis as a machinist and foreman for most of his life. He was part of the road and bridge building in southeastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois. Like construction work nowadays, there were boom and bust times and the family sometimes felt the impact.

After his retirement he remained active in his parish church and frequently attended weekday Mass. In Tampa, he lived near the Hillsborough River and enjoyed the fishing opportunities it gave him. In those days you could still catch and eat snook from the river.

He was remarkably active until his death, having mowed a neighbor's yard the day he died of a heart attack at the age of 83.
