bullet  General Notes

Otto Stoft (30 June 1880--12 Jan 1952) was born on the boat coming over from  Germany, and his family name then was Stüft (the -u- had an umlaut and was pronounced "u" with the mouth trying to say "e" also).  Otto Stoft, after receiving his degree in pharmacy from Columbia University, became a pharmacist.  His father either died in Germany or shortly after arriving in New York.  His mother's first name may have been Eva, and she died about 1915 probably in Brooklyn, New York.  Otto took his son Josef only once or twice to see his mother Eva (?)   Otto divorced his wife Augusta (b. Ganster) Stoft some time after they came to California.  Otto Stoft died (72 years old) in 1952 in Los Angeles County.  His address at that time was 8917 Beach Street, Graham, Los Angeles, California.  On the death certificate his wife was listed as Marian Stoft.  He was cremated at Sunnyside Memorial.  Otto had a brother called Fred Stoft, who went West and was lost sight of.  It was Josef Otto Stoft, who had been baptized "Josef Stüft,"  who changed his name to Stoft about 1927.  At that time his father Otto also changed his name to the same spelling.
