"He was an importer, manufacturer and sugar refiner in Boston, and a director in various corporations, but retired from active business in1890 and devoted his time to the care of estates held in trust and to the compilation of the genealogy of the Richmond family.  He spent part of many consecutive years abroad and was familiar with several languages. he was a member of the Boston Athletic Club, the Boston Art Club, The Country Club, and various other societies."

"In 1882 he was decorated by Pope Leo XIII, commander Des Croises DuSaint Sepulcre de Jerusalem, a military order founded by Pope Alexander VI in 1492; an honor rarely conferred upon a Protestant."
