James was very seriously injured when he was a young man working in a sawmill in Oregon.  His life was spared, but he was an invalid for some years and never able to do heavy work again.  In the later years of his life, he studied and achieved the rating of "Master Gardener," is active in Senior Citizen affairs, and has recently taken up oil painting.  (Our Colonial Lines, p. 34)
