bullet  General Notes

BHB1 was an extremely prominent civil engineer in Edinburgh in the mid 1800s — built up his own business which still exists today, and was responsible for setting up much of Scotland's railways and also the London to York railway line, and spoke on various Parliamentary railway committees and so on.

The family initially lived at 26 Minto Street, Edinburgh (now an American owned holiday home, as far as I can make out), and then from about 1856 onwards at "Braeside", Hope Terrace, Edinburgh (I can't get the exact number for this - it might be 12 Hope Terrace, it might be 48 Hope Terrace). They were extremely monied. The houses were huge, and BHB1's will makes a lot of reference to possessions and sums of money.

Massively influential civil engineer. Founder of Blyth and Blyth Civil Engineers, which still exists today. Concentrated mainly on railways - the list of his work says: Kilmarnock Branch, Glasgow & Ayrshire Railway. Kilmarnock - Carlisle, London - York, Slammanan - Bo'ness lines.
