Problems with the birth and marriages of Elizabeth Ann Ginger:

The Illinois Marriage index (1763 –1900), lists a marriage between Elizabeth Ginger and Joseph Blalock on 26 July 1827 in Fayette County, Illinois.  It also lists a marriage between Eliza Ann Ginger and Jonathan Moutrie on 29 April 1844 in Fayette County, Illinois.  Obviously, if Elizabeth was born in 1821, she wouldn't have married in 1827.

There are 3 or 4 possibilities:

(1)  Elizabeth was born earlier than the reported 1821.  One family tree on Ancestry gives her a birth date of 1792, as reported by a direct descendant of the Blalock marriage.  There are two problems with this resolution.  One, even though the family information I received does not record the source, the dates 1821 and 1850 came from somewhere — most likely from a cemetery gravestone.  Secondly, family tree dates for George Maultrie (who is listed as George Johnathan Moutray in some trees) are pretty clear that he was born in 1825.  It is highly unlikely that Elizabeth would have been more than 25 years older than her spouse.

(2)  Her marriage to one of the men — presumably George Maultrie — occurred outside of the state of Illinois and the marriage listing for Jonathan Moutrie and Eliza Ann Ginger is just a coincidence.  This assumes that both marriages are correct, but that there is an unknown marriage date for one of the men married to Elizabeth Ginger of Illinois (daughter of Henry Ginger).

(3)  The third theory is similar, in that it assumes that the two marriage dates in Illinois refer to two different Elizabeth Gingers.  This theory, however, assumes that only one marriage is correct for Elizabeth the daughter of Henry; the other marriage is for an unrelated Elizabeth Ginger.

There is an unsourced tree in OWT that gives family information on an Elizabeth Ann Rogers (b. 1822 in Virginia) who married George Johnathan Moutray in Fayette county on 28 Apr 1843;  this Elizabeth was previously married to a Ginger according to the names of her eldest children (William Green Ginger and Joseph Ginger, born before the marriage date).  There are names and birthdates for other Moutray children, with birthdates up till 1858 (almost 10 years after Elizabeth Ann Ginger, daughter of Henry was reported to have died).

(4)  Finally, it is conceivable (although not likely) that Henry Ginger of Illinois could have had two daughters named Elizabeth.  He is reported as having 15 children, with 6 of them being born when he was older than 50 years old.  This type of situation (more than 12 children and children born late in age) usually occurs when there are multiple marriages — and IF Henry had more than one wife, it's conceivable he could have had two daughters named Elizabeth who both lived to maturity — one Elizabeth born about 1792, and the other born circa 1821.

I have been unable to identify any Elizabeth Blalock or Elizabeth Moutrie/Moultray/Mautry in the 1850 census (or 1850 mortality schedule) to determine the validity of this received family information.  Obviously, the only way to possibly resolve these problems is to get copies of the marriage licenses and returns for the two Elizabeth Ginger marriages in Fayette County, Illinois.   If enough detail was provided on these documents, that might settle the questions defninitively (although some cemetery research would likely help too).  Since this is not my direct line, I probably won't get copies of these marriage licenses and returns any time soon.  I will leave this as an open question (making sure to note in my family tree information that this information is questionable).  Oct 2008.  kmh.
