According to the WWI draft registration card (filled out by Spurgeon Barnhill himself), he was born in "Sil--, Texas".  The handwriting is a little hard to read — so I'm not certain — but it looks like it is Silver, Texas (no county listed).  If it's Silver, Texas, then that would be Coke County. kmh.
