COOS RIVER ECHOES - BY CHARLOTTE L. MAHAFFY
PAGE 243

JOHN KELLEY VANDERBURGH, of Dutch ancestry, settled in New York before the Revolutionary War. John and his wife Emily Collver were the parents of six children:
Carrie, Winfield, Philura (Clinkinbeard), Robert, Darius, and Charles.

The family lived on a farm in Iowa prior to coming to the Roseburg area in 1864, after a 4-month trip across the plains by covered wagon. In 1865 they came to South Coos River, making the trip by pack horse over the indian trail terminating at the Billy Palmer place.

Emily's brother Alfred Bainbridge Collver was nicely settled on his Coos River farm (now owned by R.G. Rooke) at the time of his sisters arrival. Alfred often wrote to Emily when she was living in the East, telling her of the wonderful Coos Bay region with its mild climate and fine harbor.

The Vanderburghs in 1880 moved to Lane County. It was there that the father died in 1880; and the mother in 1906.

John and Emily's granddaughter, Anna Dell Clinkinbeard, a retired Coos Bay schoolteacher, wrote a saga, "Across the Plains in '64" which recaptures the life and spirit of her ancestors' trek West. Many schools have this book on file.
