LEMUEL GASSAWAY was born 23 May 1847 in Ohio. On most documents his name is spelled Gassaway, but a few times it is spelled Gassoway or even Gazzaway.

He enlisted in Company F, Kansas 9th Cavalry Regiment on 17 Aug 1863 and mustered out on 29 June 1865 at DeVall's Bluff, Arkansas.

About 1878 Lemuel married Amelia Alice Rice. She was born 29 July 1858 in Noti, Lane County, Oregon, the daughter of Horace Rice and Eliza Jane Bolton. In the 1880 census Lemuel was living in Wasco County in eastern Oregon with his wife, Amelia Alice and their infant daughter Lorena Eliza. Amelia died in Wasco County on 4 Jan 1885 at the age of 26.

On 29 January 1891 in Ada County, Idaho, Lemuel married his second wife, Clara Belle Carman. He was 45 and she was not quite 16. Clara was born in Nebraska on 19 April 1875. Their children were Lillie May (born 2 Nov 1891 in Boise, Idaho), Orran Albert (born May 1897 in California), and Charles Archibald (born 25 Jan 1900 in Oregon).

During the 1900 census Lemuel, Clara and the children lived in Eagle Point, Jackson County in southern Oregon. Lemuel was a house carpenter.

At the time of the 1910 census Lemuel, Clara and the children were farming in Gold Hill, Jackson County, Oregon. Lemuel entered the Oregon Soldiers' Home in Roseburg, Oregon in 1917. He died on 11 May 1918 and was buried in Roseburg National Cemetery.

In 1920 Clara lived with sons Oran and Charles in Roseburg. She moved to Ukiah, Mendocino County, California by 1930. She lived in Siskiyou County in 1935 but was back in Ukiah in 1940, living with her daughter May. Clara died on her 66th birthday in Humboldt County, California on 19 April 1941.

Lemuel's son Oran died in Coos County, Oregon on 3 Aug 1955. Daughter May married three times (first to Elmer Brown, then to Frank Hite, and finally to A. Wesley Hampton); she died in Brookings, Curry County, Oregon on 23 January 1960. Daughter Lorena died next, in the city of Los Angeles on 10 Aug 1968. She had married Timothy Evans, and then Henry Avent. Finally, Lemuel's son Charles (who sometimes went by his middle name of "Archibald") died in Santa Cruz County, California on 5 April 1970.
