Josephine, "Grandma Jo," was born on Dec. 16, 1913, at the Biasca family home on Coos River, the daughter of Rocco and Palmina (Signorotti) Biasca. She died on March 31, 2007, at her home of 73 years on Stock Slough with her family and early spring garden near at hand.
She was a pioneering woman of great faith and strength, living a life of purpose. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, leaving a legacy of quiet elegance, grace and dignity. She was raised and educated on Coos River, graduating from Coos River High School in 1931, excelling in academics and athletics.
Josephine married Everett C. Messerle on June 30, 1934, in Coos Bay. They lived on Stock Slough for 60 years, raising a family and creating many wonderful memories. She was an integral part in the creation and development of the family ranching and forestry business, Messerle & Sons. She took great pride in her Swiss heritage, traveling several times to visit her parents' homeland and families.
Josephine was an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church. Additionally, she was a force in developing activities such as pet days, bingo and picnics for residents of Mercy Home, St. Catherine's and Camp Easter Seal. Josephine was a member of the grange, Rivermen's Club, OSU Mothers' Club, and was a charter member of the Catching Inlet Home Extension Group.
She was an active 4-H club leader for more than 35 years, volunteered at local schools and loved to share her skills and knowledge with others. Many were those who learned to knit, crochet, sew, can fruits and vegetables, bake, arrange flowers, make plants grow and create crafts under her loving and watchful eyes. She was a champion bread baker at the Coos County Fair and an avid gardener, always willing to share her knowledge and produce from her yard or garden.
