General Notes
OLIVE MAY VINCE was born on 20 April 1913 in Wood Green, Middlesex County, England. She was the daughter of Christopher Vince and Sarah Henrietta Moolenaar. Christopher was born in Layer Breton, Essex, England, and Sarah was born in London, the daughter of a Dutch father and a French mother. Chris and Sarah had seven other children besides Olive; she was born sixth. The family was Seventh Day Adventist, and was friends with other SDA families, including the Armstrongs, the Waggoners, and the Harrowers.
In 1932, Olive, then 19 years old, came to Los Angeles went to Pacific Union College for a few months. On 21 November 1932, in Santa Cruz, California, Olive married pharmaceutical manufacturer and medical doctor Henry Robert Harrower (1883 –1953). The marriage had been arranged before Olive left England.
Dr. Harrower was born 30 April 1883 in Islington, London, England, the son of Scottish merchant banker Robert Percy Harrower and Johanna Susan Flynn. Orphaned at a young age, Henry was raised by his grandmother, Jemima Margaret (Wright) Harrower, who was a well-known for her support of the Adventist Church in London. Henry emigrated to the United States to become a doctor, and then settled in California. However, having been a part of the SDA community in London, Henry had been friends with Olive's father for many years, and he visited frequently whenever he was back in England. Dr. Harrower had previously been married to Bessie Waggoner (who was actually distantly related to Olive by marriage), but Bessie divorced Henry while he was visiting in England. Since he was now in need of a wife, it was arranged that Henry and Olive would marry, even though Henry was 30 years her senior.
Henry's business was in Glendale, but the couple came to live in Pacific Palisades, California, in a house overlooking the Pacific Ocean. They had no children (although Henry had a daughter, Verna, from his first marriage). Henry and Olive were married for just over 20 years when Henry died, on 2 Jan 1953, in Los Angeles County, California. Henry was buried in the Glendale Forest Lawn Cemetery, in the Versperland section.
A number of years after Henry died, on 01 July 1960, Olive married widower Eldon Hosea Canright (1907 –1994) in Garden Grove, California. Eldon was born 06 April 1907 in Michigan, the son of Lloyd Byrd Canright and Ida Belle DeFriest. He was also a pharmaceuticals manufacturer, and was also distantly related by marriage to Olive. (Eldon was actually the first cousin once removed of Bessie Waggoner.) Eldon's first wife, Helen Jeanette Jones, had died the year before his marriage to Olive. With her marriage to Eldon, Olive gained another adult stepdaughter, Barbara, but did not have any children of her own with her second husband.
On 1 July 1994, in Los Angeles, Eldon died of a stroke.
Olive remained a widow for the next sixteen years, living in Century City, Los Angeles, in a house that backed onto a golf course. She was close to her family and to the children of her stepdaughters and was blessed to be sharp in mind and active in body up until just a couple of years before her death. Finally, on April 18, 2011, just two days shy of her 98th birthday, Olive died of a massive stroke at her residence in Los Angeles. She was buried next to her first husband, Henry R. Harrower, in the Vesperland section of Forest Lawn Glendale Cemetery. On May 14, 2011, a memorial service was held for Olive at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Santa Monica.
