"Enlisted in Confederate Army in Austin on 13 Apr 1862. The 31st Texas Calvary Regiment was organized Apr 1862. It fought under Gen. Hindman's command in Arkansas, Missouri and the Indian Territory. The Regiment dismounted toward the of 1862 & assigned to Col. W.R. Bradfute's brigade. In 1863, Col. Joseph Speight took command of the brigade and in the summer of that year was sent east of the Mississippi River where it remained until Fall. Returning to Trans-Mississippi Dept. in Winter 1863-1864, their regiment fought in the Red River compaign (Spring 1864) under C.J. Polignac, who had assumed command of the brigade. In late 1864, Thomas E. Harrison was promoted to General & assumed command of the brigade to which the 31st Texas Calvary was assigned. They remained in Arkansas & Louisiana until the end of the War.
Ansel was discharged from the Army at Richmond, TX on 25 May 1865. He was listed as being 5'4" and fair by complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and was a farmer. His discharge believed to have been signed by Jefferson Davis. He returned to Williamson County where he married Sarah Ward.
Grandson Lawrence Stearns said he remembered Ansel as having a big stomach and it burst when he fell off of the porch. After his death, Sarah moved to Gustine, Comanche, TX to live with her daughter Barbara Ann Donald, where she died in 1920."
