Cause of her death was "milk-sickness", undulant fever. General Notes Mary and her husband Hugh left their home in Pennsylvania and headed out west while Mary was very pregnant in the dead of winter. Her daughter Isabel was born in a covered wagon somewhere in the Allegheny Mountains. Later, it is said that she and her nursing child, Patrick, died of milk-sickness, that is, a disease gotten by drinking milk of cattle which had eaten poisonous weeds.
