General Notes
EZEKIEL H. AND MARY STROUD WATERMAN
Ezekiel H. Waterman was born in Cayuga County, New York - February 24, 1812. He was the son of John W. Waterman, who was also born in New York. He married Mary A. Stroud, a native of Ohio. They started West around 1840, spent several years in Missouri before continuing on to California by wagon train.
They had two sons, Oscar and John William. John was born in Missouri -April 10, 1845. The family continued their journey, coming to California in 1852. There Oscar was killed in a mining accident. In 1858 they came to Oregon and the Willamette Valley, settled at a town named Jefferson, near Salem.
In 1862 Ezekiel and his son, John W., journeyed over the Cascades to Eastern Oregon, bringing some cattle. They took up "Squatters Rights" in the Waterman Flats area; which was so named because Ezekiel Waterman was the first white man to settle there. He did not bring his wife on this trip. They returned to Jefferson in 1864 where they were in partnership in the mercantile business. Mary A. Stroud Waterman died in 1866 in Marion County.
On September 18, 1866 he married Nancy Smith, the daughter of Martin and Eliza J. (Mitchell) Smith. The wedding occurred in Marion County, Near Jefferson, and Mrs. Waterman was born in Iowa. To Ezekiel and Nancy, one son, Martin, and one daughter, Jennie, were born.
He again returned to the vicinity of Fort Watson, lived there for six years, raising stock then he sold his property to John Foplano and moved to The Dalles. He entered into the Loan Office Business, did quite well and purchased several ranches in the area.
He died December 3, 1903 at the age of 91 years and is buried at The Dalles, Oregon.

Stockman and capitalist of The Dalles, Oregon; was born in N.Y. (1812) son of John Waterman and went to Calif. with the "big emigration" of 1852 where he mined with success then came north to Jefferson, Oregon where he opened a store (1856). As soon as military authorities made the country east of The Dalles safe for settlement he headed for Grant county where he established a stock ranch near Camp Watson, furnishing meat for the miners and horses for the military men and freighters around 1865 to 71. He retired to The Dalles as a capitalist and money broker, before the days of banks here, and whenever he had to foreclose on a piece of property he always paid the owner the difference between the amount of the outstanding loan and the value of the property, something very few money lenders will do. In 1831 he married Mary Stroud who died and in 1866 married Nancy Miller, daughter of Martin and Eliza (Mitchell) Smith
