bullet  General Notes

Taught 52 years in Oregon, beginning with grade schools, later in high school work.  After his retirement, teachers were in so much demand, that in spite of his age, about 75, he was persuaded to teach 4 more years in Forest Grove High School, and was able to enjoy the work.  (Our Colonial Lines, p. 96)

Note:  earlier citations say he taught for 54 years; p. 96 says he taught for 52 years plus an additional 4 years

About 1908 or so, George was advised by his doctor to go to California and spend the winter there, in order to recover from a nervous condition brought on by teaching school in the daytime, and studying law in the evenings.  So he took his family, and embarked for San Francisco, on the steamer "Rose City".

Since the earthquake of 1906 had destroyed or damaged so many houses, many people were living in makeshift homes, and even these were scarce and hard to find.  The home of the George Brown family was built around one large central room — the living room.  Around the 4 sides of this central room were 4 worn-out street cards, one on each side.  One was the kitchen and dining-room, the rest bedrooms.  The Browns were delighted with the Calla lillies na d chrysanthemums which bloomed freely in the yard, all winter.

While they were in California, George's brother James persuaded them to take care of his two small children, and in the spring when they went home to Hood River, they took Elise and Clyde home with them.  In about two years, Jim Brown married a widow with two little girls, and he then took Clyde and Elsie back to San Francisco.
