bullet  General Notes

first cousin to his wife, Georgia (on the Gatlin side)

Note:  There is considerable confusion between two different Alfred Gatlin Matthews.  Both were born in Missisippi in the early 1840s; both died in Texas.  Both have fathers named "Thomas Matthews"; both have mothers with maiden surname Gatlin (their mothers are sisters and, in fact, the two Alfreds are first cousins).  One Alfred — "Tobe" — is the son of Thomas Matthews (sometimes referered to Thomas E. Matthews) and Susan S. Gatlin; he married Mary Georgia Ann Gatlin ("Georgia") and died in 1911 in Copperas Cove, Coryell County, Texas.  The other Alfred — "Alf" — is the son of Thomas Allen Rayburn Matthews and Louisa Hanks Gatlin; he married Joesphine Turley, and died in 1938 in Manchaca, Travis County, Texas.

Alf was a private in the 2d Texas Cavalry (Confederate) in the Civil War. Tobe was with the 9th Arkansas (Confederate infantry) at Shiloh (also called the Battle of Pittsburg Landing), discharged and sent home sick, and then, about a year later he served with a cavalry unit west of the Mississippi until the end of the war. What unit this was, or even which side he was on during this time, is uncertain since Arkansas supplied troops to both sides. While Tobe volunteered the first time, he was likely conscripted the second.

  5. Footnote, The name "Alfred Gassaway Matthews," while frequently associated with this individual, is still an erroneous version of his name. Unfortunately, many years ago a Matthews family genealogist mistakenly assumed "Gassaway" (another family name) was what the "G" stood for in Aflred's middle name and that error got replicated through OneWorldTree. Although the error was eventually recognized, but the time it was the misinformation was already gospel in family trees all over the Internet.
