Roy W. Downing

Carthage - Roy W. Downing, age 71 of Carthage passed away at 10:18 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at his home.

Born Dec. 19, 1932 in Charles City, Iowa, he was the son of the late Roy W. and Jessie W. Downing.

He has been a resident of Carthage since 1970.

He served in the armed forces 12 years, leaving the Army ranked as Sgt. E-5. He retired from Safeway Cheese after 19 years of service.

On July 31, 1970 he married Donna Taylor of Carthage. She survives.

Additional survivors include a son, two step-daughters, and two grandchildren.  Also surviving are two sisters and one brother.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Jim Downing and Kurt Olsen.

Visitation will be 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Services will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at Ulmer Funeral home with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Carthage.

Carthage - Services for Roy W. Downing, 71, who died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 were held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 13, at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel, Carthage.

The Rev. C.K. Warden, minister, officiated. "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross" were played. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery with Military Honors presented by American Legion Post #13.
