Marion Bryson, Spartanburg
James Marion Bryson, 76, of 315 Holly Drive, died, September 28, 1999 in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Owings, S.C., he was the son of the late James Marion and Nannie Cox Bryson. He was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church having served as Deacon, Elder and Clerk of Session for a number of years. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1943 with a BS Degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the 489th and 490th Engineering Squadrons of the 386 Service Group, Army Air Forces in the Pacific from June 1943 to October 1946, attaining the rank of Captain. Following his military service, he worked for highway construction contractors until becoming Laurens County Engineer in 1949. In 1955 he became a Building Official for the City of Spartanburg. He worked for the City of Spartanburg for 32 years serving as Public Works Director, Urban Renewal Director, Community Development Director and Assistant City Manager. During his service with the City of Spartanburg, he planned and acquired funding for the first Urban Renewal Project in South Carolina. Under his supervision, three additional Urban Renewal Projects were approved and executed. He supervised the preparation of the applications for the Model City Program and Spartanburg became one of the two Model Cities in South Carolina. He was presented with the Harry S. Swearingen Award from the American Public Works Association in 1986. He served as President of the Carolinas Council of Housing and Redevelopment Officials of which he was a Life Member. He was instrumental in organizing the South Carolina Chapter of American Public Works Association. He has served for many years on the Board of Directors for the Spartanburg Council on Aging. He served as a volunteer for Mobile Meals.
The family will receive friends at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m. on today, September 29. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Covenant Presbyterian Church conducted by the Reverend Thomas P. Groome, III. Graveside service will be held at Cannon Memorial Park, Fountain Inn, at 3 p.m.
