Elma Stokes
Philippians 4:13 — I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Elma Mable Kennington Stokes of Camden died Friday, April 27, 2007.
She was born in Lee County, South Carolina on September 24th, 1918, the daughter of the late Melvin and Maggie Chewning Kennington. She is predeceased by her husband William Clennie Stokes, Sr. and two of her sons, William Clennie Stokes, Jr. and Barney Melvin Stokes, Sr. She came from a large, wonderful family of ten. She is predeceased by her sisters, Sally Kennington, Mae K. Eddings, Marion K. Cumalander and her brothers Jimmy and T.B. Kennington. Two beloved grandchildren, Teresa Faye Stokes and James Robert (Robbie) Stokes, Jr. have also gone on before her.
Elma Stokes was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Antioch Community and attended both St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and Charleston Baptist Church in Charleston, S.C., on a regular basis during her time in Charleston. The congregation at Antioch and Cedar Creek Baptist Churches never forgot Mrs. Stokes and always sent her uplifting notes filled with love and kindness. While there never seems to be enough time to respond, it is very important that people know how much she appreciated their thoughts and prayers.
Although never officially employed, she was by far one of the hardest workers God put on the face of this earth. She raised a family of eight, farmed, cooked, sewed, canned fruits and vegetables, and loved to take care of others. She loved to feed people and enjoyed it most when they ate a huge meal. Had she been able to drive, she would have done even more. Her flowers, trees, and gardens were treasures, and she instilled some of that love into the hearts of her children and grandchildren. She was truly a servant of God and definitely lived a humble life of servitude to others, never putting herself first. Even during her illness, she was always an easy patient, undemanding and grateful. No matter how bad she felt, she always said, "Thank You." Her faith in God and her love for everyone were monumental. She will be missed by so many and should be emulated by them as well.
Should you wish to make donations in lieu of flowers, she would have greatly appreciated contributions to either the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or to Antioch Baptist Church, 1875 Antioch Road, Camden, SC 29020.
Visitation was held at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church, 1875 Antioch Road, Camden, S.C. 29020. The attending pastors were the reverends Howard Brown, Sim Smith, Bobby Wallace and Glis Cribb. Burial took place in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
