- Namesake: About Marion Hamilton Jeffrey...
Marion Hamilton Jeffrey was born 18 May 1883 in Rothesay, Bute, Scotland, and died 1888 in Rothesay when she was only 4 years old. She was the daughter of James Jeffrey and Elizabeth Blair.
Marion was named after her uncle Robert Jeffrey's wife, Marion Hamilton. Robert was her father's youngest brother, born 22 Sep 1849 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland (12 years after her father James was born). On 21 Oct 1880, Robert married Marion Hamilton, the daughter of John Hamilton and Marion Paton, in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. Irvine is where James and Robert were both born, and where Marion Hamilton was born on 21 Jan 1856.
When Robert got married he was a mercantile clerk, and although he was born in Irvine, he was then living in Georgetown, Guyana. So after they wed in Irvine, Robert took his new bride to Georgetown. She gave birth to an infant daughter in 1881. Likely the daughter was named Marion Jeffrey (perhaps Marion Paton Jeffrey, or Marion Hamilton Jeffrey), although since the records were in Guyana the name is not presently known. Unfortunately, both mother and infant daughter died of yellow fever in Georgetown on 17 Oct 1881, just a half-week shy of the mother's first year wedding anniversary.
Robert erected a monument in Irvine Churchyard in memory of Marion Hamilton and his infant daughter. And so that's why Robert's brother James and his wife Elizabeth Blair named their last daughter Marion Hamilton Jeffrey.
The story of Marion's name is a sad legacy, made even more sorrowful since she also died young.
However, Marion's brother James Jeffrey (b. 1869 in Greenock, son of James Jeffrey and Elizabeth Blair) also had a daughter he named Marion Hamilton Jeffrey (in this case, named after his baby sister). This second Marion Hamilton Jeffrey was born in 28 March 1905 in Rothesay, and she lived to the age of 80 years old. She emigrated with her family to New Zealand in 1909 and married John Richard Callon in 1927.
- He was buried at the Irvine Old Parish Churchyard in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1902.
Robert married Marion HAMILTON, daughter of John HAMILTON and Marion PATON, on 21 October 1880 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 2 (Marion HAMILTON was born on 21 January 1856 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, died on 17 October 1881 in Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana and was buried in 1881 in Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana.). The cause of her death was Yellow Fever.
