James applied for his mate's certificate of service when the Mercantile Marine Act of 1850 made it compulsory to have such documentation. He became a ship's apprentice when he was 13 years old, and served for 4 years. Next he was a seaman for 10 months, and then a second mate for a year. He was 20 years old when he applied for his certificate at the port of Glasgow on 16 January 1851.
