    John enlisted for the duration of the war on 18 November 1915.
    The bulk of his service was overseas.
    He started as a driver, was promoted first to acting corporal, then to corporal, then to sergeant, and finally promoted to staff sergeant.
    He was discharged "on termination of period of engagement" on 17 September 1919.
    John received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
