Charles McGill
Former pro soccer player organized Fall River team
Charles McGill, 85, of Adams House, 1168 Highland Ave., formerly of 324 Barnaby St., died Wednesday at the Adams House, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mildred A. (Williams) McGill.
Born in Scotland, son of the late John and Catherine (Stewart) McGill, he was an international professional soccer player. In 1925 he came to Fall River to play with the Fall River soccer team until 1931, when he returned to Scotland to resume his sports career in Aberdeen. He returned to Fall River in 1955 and formed the Fall River Professional Soccer Team.
He was employed as as a welder at Gold Seal Tank Co. and later at the William J. Manning & Co., both of Fall River. He also worked as a security guard at the former Truesdale Hospital until retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Church of the Ascension and a former member of King Philip Lodge, AF&AM, of Fall River.
He leaves two sons, ----- McGill of Somerset and ----- McGill of Union Town, Ohio; two daughters, Alice Phillips of Fall River and ----- ----- of Amherst, N.H.; a sister, May Cree of Kilmarnock, Scotland; 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. from the "Cherry Place" Home of Waring-Ashton & Coughlin-D.D. Sullivan-Driscoll, 178 Winter St., Fall River, with a funeral service at 1 p.m. in the Church of the Ascension, Rock Street. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
