Recorded Events in His Life
- Other Spouses: Sarah Ann Peck (m. 1873); Pauline Alsup (m. 1878); Nancy Jane Cochrane (m. 1882); And Clarissa Boerstler (m. 1913). Joseph married Sara Ann Peck on 21 July 1873 in Vernon County, Missouri.
He next married Pauline Alsup on 28 May 1878 in Monroe County, Missouri.
Then he married Nancy Jane Cochran, daughter of Henry Daniel Cochran and Matilda McFarland, on 10 June 1882 in Centerville, Linn County, Kansas, USA. Nancy was born on 12 Jan 1850 in Iowa, and she died on 15 July 1913 in LaHarpe, Allen County, Kansas, USA. Nancy had previously been married to James Louis Lusk in Kansas in 1868 and had several children with him. Together, Joseph and Nancy had Harriett "Hattie" Mapes (1883 - 1918), twins Mada Mapes and Sarah J. "Sadie" Mapes (both born Feb 1885); and Joseph Whitzle"Joe" Mapes Jr (1887 - 1945). There may have been a daughter Pearl Grace Mapes who died in infancy.
Finally, Joseph married Clarissa Boerstler on 1 Oct 1913 at La Harpe, Allen County, Kansas, USA. I suspect this may be Mrs. Clarissa (Cruse) Boerstler who was in Big Creek, Neosho County, Kansas in the 1910 census; however other trees say that Clarissa Cruse, born 15 May 1873 in Chautauqua County, Kansas, USA, also died on 13 February 1912 in Chautauqua County, Kansas (which would have been before the marriage to Joseph Mapes). Perhaps she really died in 1914??
- Spouse: Zerilda (or Cerilda) Ida "Rilda" Hornbeck, daughter of James Hornbeck and Emeline "Milly" Scritchfield. Rildy was born about 1838 in Missouri; she married Joseph on 16 Sep 1858 in Cedar County, Missouri, and she died before 16 June 1870 either in Kansas or Missouri. She was the mother of James H. Mapes (b. abt 1859 in Missouri); John Mapes (b. abt 1861 in Missouri); William A. J. Mapes (b. abt 1865 in Kansas); and Ira Mapes (b. abt 1866 in Kansas). Her sister Sarah married Joseph's brother Ira.
