* Handwriting is poor and the spelling of the surname may not be consistent for all members of this household. Surname could be "Hanning," "Haning," or "Haining."
** There is a tick mark in the column to indicate Peter is not a member of the family; however, the household statistics for the Hanning family (6 males, 6 females, 1 female not related, 3 males and 3 females attended school in the past year) do count Peter as a family member. It should also be noted that the tickmarks for the Hanning family counts are all on the wrong line. The tick mark on Peter's line in the "not related" column seems to be simply another error.

HANNING, JAMES HOWITT
Fatal Accident in Puslinch
On Tuesday night, March 24, 1868, an old and respected resident of that township lost his life. Mr. Hanning had gone to Aberfoyle in the early part of the day with the wagon. On his way home in the evening, when about half way between Morriston and his own farm, it appears he had fallen out of the wagon and the wheels had gone over his body about the region of the heart. He had not lain long before Malcolm Clark came up and found him unable to move and insensible. Fortunately, the horses had stood still after the accident and Mr. Clark at once got him into the wagon and took him home. Dr. Keating was, at once, sent for but found he was beyond all relief and he died the same night at 10, two hours after the accident happened. The doctor found on examining him, that some of his ribs were broken and forced into his heart. He never spoke a word after the accident. Mr. Hanning took an active part in all matters concerning the township and was greatly respected. He leaves a widow and family.
James married Margaret McLEAN, daughter of Peter McLEAN and Margaret MARTIN, about 1839 in Ontario, Canada.1 2 (Margaret McLEAN was born on 7 May 1813 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland,2 16 23 died on 3 March 1886 in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada 23 24 and was buried in 1886 in Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.). The cause of her death was Heart Disease.
