Robert G. Crowder Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Yale University whose rigorous approach to the study of learning and memory inspired a generation of experimental psychologists, died Thursday, July 27 after a long illness. He was 60 years old. Crowder joined Yale's faculty shortly after he received his Ph.D in 1965 at the University of Michigan, where he had studied under the renowned psychologist Arthur W. Melton. Through Melton, Crowder traced his academic lineage directly to former Yale President James Roland Angell and William James. Crowder is best known for his work on human memory, as well as on time and music perception. Colleagues recall his strict adherence to the scientific method, his profound knowledge of his field's history and his humility. He activly sought to debunk his own theory of auditory memory and played a key role in overturning it. During his career at Yale, Crowder served both as director of graduate studies and as director of undergraduate studies. A disproportionate number of graduate students who studied under him are now themselves among the most prominent memory researchers in the field. Crowder authored more than 100 academic papers and two books, including "Principles of Learning and Memory", which is now considered a classic in its field. He was editor of Memory and Cognition, and served on the editorial boards of several academic journals. Crowder was born in Waterloo, Iowa on Sept 16, 1939, to the late Louis L. Crowder and Lucille Burrell Crowder. He was raised in Evanston, Ill. He leaves his wife, ----- ----- Crowder and three adult children: ----- and ------ Crowder of New Haven, Conn., and ----- Crowder of Boston.
The family is planning a memorial service in September. Memorial contributions can be made to the International Alliance for Children, 2 Ledge Lane, New Milford, Ct 06776, or to The Graduate Student Fund, Department of Psychology, Yale University, PO Box 208205, New Haven, Ct 06520. Arrangements in care of Beecher & Bennett, 2300 Whitney Ave, Hamden, Ct.
